NBWerk May Highlight : Go BULLDOGS!

GO Bulldogs.

What happens when you prepare for a role? What happens when you know you are the person for the role- you feel that the role is yours yet they don’t give you the position?

You can quit or keep preparing. If you are sure of the destination, you prepare.

Coach Dwayne Springs is our NBWerk Highlight story for May. Coach D, my dad- has been grinding for a long time. When we think of perseverance we look at this story. When we think of the “get it done” mentality that we share with NBWerk- that’s what Coach has shown. He built a successful youth program with the Waukegan Chiefs- winning numerous championships at the Heavyweight level. After, he went on to be part of all the bulldog teams that had success since 2008.

Coach’s experience and success make the hire a no-brainer.  Look at the many who showed support and joy to see Coach get the position. Yeah, this was good for the community.

What about the process? What about the nights of being an assistant? What about knowing you are the best for the job, and knowing the level of responsibility you accept for the young men in the community? For some, the job is just a check. For some, the position is a platform to engage young men and the community. What about the years of seeing others get the Job? Still showing support because you were never competing with other coaches. What about living right by the Football field and feeling the pain of every loss? Still engaging as many as you can through HCT! training and the B&B AAU program. Still… There was a position in the community that you were built for. What then?

What do you do when what you know should happen, hasn’t yet?

“Do what you are supposed to do, and what you think should happen will”

Coach Kept going. Designing programs and camps to engage the youth. Coach kept werking! He was a speaker during the BLM marches of 2020. He coached youth and adults through his social media platform. Instead of being one of the many complainers regarding the school system, coach D began to build a school. A school designed to attack all the areas that youth in our community under preform. Yeah, Coach kept moving to raise the standard of the community. Coach just started coaching. He coached the leaders on how to be better. He coached the followers on how to effectively assist in the mission of educating our community. Coach did what he knew to do, he coached. He showed the many layers of a coach. He mentored young men that would have been lost to the system. He protected the voiceless by speaking out against the wrongs of different entities. He coached through adversity. Many came to destroy his character. He was banned from gyms because he spoke out about the injustice he saw. He did it knowing he would have to adjust his business, but thinking it more important to speak up for those who couldn’t.

Ain’t nun but some werk. Coach D, receives the role as Head Football Coach, after 20  years of preparation. After being told no more than once. After, working so hard toward the goal that the goal became almost a cancer. Yeah, conflicting the mind because after so long, how could he still desire the job that has long been his? The journey of life is better because of the adversity we face.

Coach D got the Job- but some of his best coaching was done as we watched him continue to work through all the obstacles set before him. As we congratulate Coach, I say thanks to my pops for proving my statement to be true!

Somebody Gotta Be Great! “Aint nun but a task”

Love
